The first thing you need to consider when choosing fake grass is the pile height. Pile height is simply the measurement from the bottom of the backing material to the tip of the longest blade of grass. The higher the pile height, the fuller and thicker the grass will look. However, you don’t want to choose a fake grass with too high of a pile height, or it will start to look unnatural. A good rule of thumb is to choose a fake grass with a pile height that is 1/3 to 1/2 of an inch shorter than the length of your pet’s nails.

Next, you need to take a close look at the backing material. The backing material is what gives fake grass its strength and durability. The two most common types of backing materials are polyurethane and latex. Latex backing is less expensive but not as durable as polyurethane. Polyurethane, on the other hand, is more expensive but will last longer. If you have pets or children who play on your lawn frequently, we recommend choosing fake grass with a polyurethane backing for maximum durability.

Finally, you need to consider what type of infill you want in your fake grass. Infill is what gives fake grass its weight, bounce, and drainage capabilities. The three most common types of infill are silica sand, crumb rubber, and Envirofill® (a eco-friendly option made from recycled materials). Silica sand is the least expensive option but can be abrasive on skin and doesn’t drain well. Crumb rubber is more expensive but provides good drainage and cushioning. Envirofill® is also more expensive but drains exceptionally well and is gentle on skin.
